"People don't realize that it can be different. Not that it can be logistically different but that it can feel different. That the experience can be different. And not just that it can be more easeful, but that it is more meaningful. It's more intentional. Which means it has more power." - shea in the catskills
Your coziest creative nest, (re)building your digital home around joy and power
So many writers have their creative joy and power siphoned off in a million small ways. The notification that pops up just when they get in the flow. The manuscript spread across Google Drive, Scrivener, Word, and the old computer that's now in the storage unit. The way that some sort of AI icon pops up whenever they try to start writing.
These can seem like petty annoyances that we should "just ignore." No.
Shaping our creative life by selecting and tuning our digital tools to fit *our unique preferences and processes* is a creative act in itself. And by honing into the tiny things that annoy us and get in our way, then imagining and creating the solutions that uniquely work for us, we not only strengthen our creative power, but we strengthen the tools of discernment and imagination that we need for our best writing.
Most artists and craftspeople care about their tools. Many writers feel strongly about certain pens or notebooks. But when it comes to the digital world, they use apps that annoy them, fonts they think are ugly, filing systems where they can't find anything.
The digital spaces we create to work on our writing should be as unique to us and creatively designed as a master craftsperson's studio.
We don't need to be tech whizzes or to buy expensive software to make this happen.
We do need to practice discernment. To sense into and acknowledge what gets in our way - even if it's been getting in our way so long that we didn't know there was any other option. To imagine what a solution might look like, then to experiment and iterate until we find what works for us.
When you open your computer to work on your writing, you can feel like you are entering a delicious, quiet library with a spacious, sunlit desk ready for your most daring fictional world. Or into a coffee shop buzzing with energy and new ideas. Whatever the ideal creative space feels like for you, you can explore how to create that feeling with your choices of digital tools.
This is not about technology, not really. It is about exercising discernment, intention, and power around the tools we use for our creative work.
This is a mentored independent study that includes two 1:1 advising sessions over four weeks with prompts and exercises to guide you in sensing into, discerning, and creating the digital writing space of your dreams.
You'll leave with a digital set-up designed around your unique needs, energy, and process, but more importantly, you'll have the tools to discern what works best for you in your creative digital space, and the systems to keep moving toward your creative autonomy and power.
