Allowing our own finished work to feel like enough is a creative practice in itself. It doesn't come naturally any more than creative technique comes without practice. Finishing small things lets us practice this.
Finish small things, a mentored independent study in creative enoughness
Many writers live in a constant state of incompletion with their creative work. Maybe they have a weekly newsletter, and they barely get to enjoy the satisfaction of finishing a post before needing to think about the next one, and the one after that. Maybe they have been working on a book for three years, or ten, without ever getting to hold the finished work in their hands. Which means that for years, their work may not feel real, tangible, or good enough.
Not experiencing completion and enoughness is a drain on creative energy. But completion and enoughness can be practiced.
Like any practice, we start small. We finish small things.
Here's a secret: The hard part about self-publishing a book, chapbook, or zine isn't logistical. You can absolutely lay out your book, design a nice cover, get it printed, and set up a way to sell it online (and if you run into any trouble, you can ask a friend to help, or pay someone to do it for you.)
The hard part of self-publishing is this: When you self-publish, there are two things that you, and you alone, must do.
1. You must decide that your work is good enough to publish.
2. You must put your work out into the world.
Traditional publishing, for all its flaws, lets us abdicate or share these responsibilities. Someone else decides your work is good enough. Other people manage the publication schedule.
Finish small things, a mentored independent study in creative enoughness is designed to be a creative container, a playground, for you to explore the process of finishing and self-publishing a small physical work, such as a chapbook or zine.
While you will be supported in the logistics of choosing a publication approach, the main purpose of this container is not about layout skills or other logistical aspects of publishing physical work. You'll learn just enough of this to get where you need to go.
This is a mentored independent study in creative enoughness. We will work together to publish a small physical work, not just to have this completed work, but to explore what it means to complete and share our work. When do we feel tender? When do we feel like enough? How can we cultivate a sense of enoughness around our creative work? How can we independently offer ourselves the gift of small creative completions as a part of our regular creative practice? How can we strengthen the muscle of feeling satisfied by our creative work?
This mentored independent study container includes three 1:1 meetings over the course of six weeks, with customized reflection prompts and activities between sessions. At the end of the six weeks, you'll have a small self-published work and strengthened clarity on how you can center enoughness and completion within your creative practice.
This course opens in late fall 2025. Join the waitlist below.
